Fellowship Programs

Guidelines

The CEF fellowship program is designed for those who have extensive experience and certification in labor support, and desire additional certification with CEF and/or to work as a CA with the Foundation.  The Foundation upholds the highest quality of standards, certification will be granted to those who meet the minimum requirements outlined in the CEF training & certification manual. To be granted CEF certification the following requirements must be met:

If you are currently certified:

  • Copy of current certification (CEF recognizes accepts DONA & ALACE, all others must be submitted to the certification committee for review.  Documents submitted must include the instructors CV, course outline, timeline and objectives)
  • Copies of all documents necessary for that certification
  • Attend CEF training program
  • Documentation of the basic requirements for CEF certification

If you are in the process of being certified

  • Copy of attendance of previous doula training (CEF recognizes accepts DONA & ALACE, all others must be submitted to the certification committee for review.  Documents submitted must includes the instructors CV, course outline, timeline and objectives)
  • Copies of all documents thus far completed
  • Attend CEF training program
  • Documentation of the basic requirements for CEF certification

Until certification is granted, you are considered a childbirth assistant intern and are not allowed to charge for their services. As stated in the CEF Ethics & Standards for Certified and Intern Childbirth Assistants; item nine (9) of the Ethical & Standards for Childbirth Assistants section: During a CA's internship, she shall not charge a fee for any services she provides that she reports to The Foundation for internship credit.  Paid births may not be counted toward the internship requirements without prior arrangement with The Foundation.

Only those who have a previous certification, extensive experience and can provide proof of a professional business license, as well as doula business activity prior to taking the CEF training program will be permitted to charge for services while completing the CEF certification requirements.  All others desiring to charge during the certification process must submit a petition in writing to the CEF Certification Committee; a Curriculum Vitae including birth related experience and any other documents, certification or letters relevant to the situation.

CEF is one of nine organizations that certifies professional labor assistants and, by far, has the most rigorous requirements. If your looking for a very comprehensive program this is it."
